In memoriam Elliott Carter

Elliott Carter's sunny, playful, and inexhaustibly interesting music has given me countless hours of joy and happiness.

May it do the same for you.

Thank you, Boom's Dungeon, for being one of the places where Carter fans met. We know how we feel. Only now can we begin to take stock of what he fully meant to us. I will always carry his work around inside me. I love his music very, very much.

Somehow I can't think of Elliott and be sad. He is a personification of joy to me, very life affirming. His music never grows old or stale.

Never forget meeting the great man in a pre-prom talk here in London many years ago..His wit and wisdom were very much on display that day..I couldn't resist asking what his thoughts were on the then highly popular trend towards tonality in some composers (Gorecki, Penderecki etc)..He chuckled and said words to the effect that these grown men ought to know better..Thankfully Elliot never did have a 'Sacred Minimalist' phase..Thanks Boom for these posts celebrating and marking the passing of the man.

Thanks boom for providing this forum. Mr. Carter's music was a real touchstone for me and I take immense joy not only from his music but from helping others discover his work. Last Friday I was able to play the Horn Concerto, Triple Duo, Night Fantasies and the Piano Sonata for three former classmates of mine. They all received this experience as a revelation.
